Ibex is one of the climbing areas that is so good, one hesitates to post anything about it for fear that the word might get out and people will start going there. Crowding is one of the fastest ways to ruin the outdoor experience for me, so I approach posts like this with a little bit of anxiety.
That being said, Ibex rules. Everything from 5.4 to 5.14, with trad and sport, single and multi-pitch routes, plus almost no approach no matter which crag upon which you’re climbing, you couldn’t ask for a better zone. The downside? It’s out in the west desert; way out in the west desert. Go to Delta, then keep going, and going, and going… Drive across that old hardpan of an ancient lake and you’re there.
It’s remote, it’s convenient, and the climbing is extremely fun. Taylor and I went out with the Utah Climbing Club this weekend, and those events are always worth the time and effort. Darren Knezek and Jennifer Moore have done an amazing job creating a social group that helps support people in their growing passion for all things climbing. From bouldering to 18,000′ summits, the UCC has a little something for everyone.
